Search Doddridge County Cases

A Doddridge County case search works best when you know which court holds the file. Circuit Court records sit with the county's Circuit Clerk. Magistrate and Family matters run through different offices, and municipal or federal cases follow their own access rules. Search by case number when you can. A name alone may surface only a possible match. Once a docket opens, note the court, the status, the filings, hearing dates, and what documents you can view, then confirm anything important with the clerk who keeps the record. A blank result is not the last word. The case may still exist under a different court or a different spelling of the name.

Searching Cases by Name

Your first move is sorting the case between Circuit and Magistrate Court. WVPASS covers the public side of Circuit Court civil and criminal files. MCRSearch is the separate Magistrate Court information search. Family pleadings may be confidential. Neither tool works as a full municipal or federal search. Picking the right court up front prevents the most common false no-result problem.

  1. Open the official West Virginia court record access page and choose the link for the correct court level.
  2. For Magistrate Court, enter a last name and first name in MCRSearch. The judiciary documents those name fields, but does not state a partial-match rule.
  3. Review no more than the displayed 30-result limit and compare the filing date, charge or case type, disposition, and county. Do not publish a birth date from a result.
  4. For Circuit Court, create the free WVPASS registration required for public searching and use only the controls actually displayed by the live portal.
  5. Record the court and case number from a likely match, then verify the file with the Circuit Clerk or Magistrate Clerk before relying on a date or disposition.

One official page opens both doors. The county court directory sends Circuit and Magistrate inquiries down separate links, and that split shapes every Doddridge County case search that follows.

Two systems, two clerks. The Circuit and Magistrate split reflects how Doddridge County actually keeps its court records, not two routes to one shared index of every case.

Doddridge County Case Search Paths

Start with the official county court directory to sort out jurisdiction. The Circuit Court of Doddridge County serves as the general-jurisdiction trial court. Magistrate Court handles traffic, minor criminal matters, small claims, and preliminary criminal work. Family cases run through the Eighteenth Family Court Circuit. The Circuit Clerk holds those records, though. West Union sits apart. The city posts no municipal docket portal. A citation naming the municipality belongs with the city clerk or recorder at 304-873-1400. An empty Magistrate result does not answer a municipal question. Federal cases stay outside both state systems. They run through PACER or the Northern District of West Virginia clerk.

Choose before searching: Circuit uses WVPASS, Magistrate uses MCRSearch, Family access depends on the record, and municipal or federal cases require separate channels.

Searching by Case Number

Search by case number when you can. One number points to a single court file. A name query can pull up many. MCRSearch takes case numbers directly. Circuit Clerk public indexes list them too. CourtPLUS entries show them beside the case header. Type the value exactly as it appears on your citation, notice, pleading, or prior order. Keep every letter, punctuation mark, and leading zero. No single format covers every Doddridge County court docket. The exact court-issued case number beats any guessed pattern of year, type, and sequence. A failed lookup often means the number belongs to a different system. That could be a citation ID, payment-plan ID, lower-court number, or appellate number. Those identifiers do not always match the docket you want. On the phone, read the full number. Name the court printed on the document, then ask whether an appeal or transfer drew a new number. For Circuit or Family court records, call Michele D. Britton's office at 304-873-2331. For Magistrate records, call April Meeks's office at 304-873-2694.

Doddridge County MCRSearch Field Guide

MCRSearch is free to use. No account and no search fee are required. Before results load, the portal shows a disclaimer that you must accept to continue. The judiciary says a search can run on a first name, a last name, or a case number. Plan around two limits: results stop at 30 entries, and the tool does not display document images. Treat a hit as a pointer to the file held by the Magistrate Clerk. Then pull the paper itself from that office.

Doddridge County case search MCRSearch entry screen

The official MCRSearch entry screen is the public's way into magistrate records, and the judiciary's own explanatory notes spell out what each field means and where the tool stops.

A broad surname can flood the results. Trim it with a first name, or switch to the case number. Before trusting a row, check the county and the filing date. A result can carry a name, birth date, filing date, charge, disposition, and a list of filed documents. Leave personal identifiers out of any notes you plan to share with others.

Note: MCRSearch case information is not a certified record, and a no-result screen is not proof that no Magistrate file exists.

What a Case Search Returns

Think of a public case search as returning metadata. That means the facts that identify and organize the file, not the file itself. CourtPLUS screens, for example, show a case header plus separate areas for docket entries, documents, hearings, parties, attorneys, motions, financials, and other data. What you actually see depends on the file and its security level. A docket event on screen is no promise that its underlying paper can be downloaded.

Case numberThe court's identifier for the file. Save it exactly as displayed.
Court and countyThe tribunal and county that hold the record and supply the proper clerk route.
Style or partiesThe public case caption when its security level permits display.
Case type and subtypeThe broad category and a more specific filing classification.
Created or filed dateThe date the case or entry was placed in the system, not necessarily a hearing date.
StatusAn open, closed, or other state shown by the system; verify any outcome through the file.
Docket entryA short record of a filing, order, process, return, judgment, or related action.
Document or referenceA linked paper or code when public and available; some entries have no public image.
Hearing informationThe event type, date, time, location, judge, or status when publicly shown.
Security levelThe access classification that may limit parties, style, entries, or documents.

A docket entry is not the filed paper itself. When you need the exact order, note its entry date, description, and reference. Then ask the clerk for the document or a certified copy.

Doddridge County WVPASS Coverage

WVPASS opens public Circuit Court civil and criminal files. It covers all 55 counties, statewide. According to the official launch material, public documents reach back to 1999. Signing up costs nothing, and searching is free too. Public downloads run 25 cents per page. A small card processing fee applies too. Counsel of record downloads without the page fee.

The live search form changes from time to time. Its exact labels and filters are not fixed. Work with the controls the portal actually shows. Jot down the case number, county, court, judge, case type, and status. Also note docket events, hearings, security level, and document availability wherever they appear. CourtPLUS is separate. It serves authorized users for filing and documents, not anonymous searching.

WVPASS opened for public use on March 10, 2025. Doddridge Circuit and Family e-filing had already gone live. It ran through CourtPLUS and WV E-File on May 17, 2021. That gap helps explain why electronic coverage and older paper holdings can look uneven. If a paper case file is missing online, ask the Circuit Clerk.

Statewide vs County Case Search

Doddridge County has no separate web portal of its own. You are choosing between statewide online tools and the local clerk's office. WVPASS handles public Circuit files. MCRSearch covers Magistrate case information. The clerks hold the actual files. They answer access questions, allow inspection, and make copies.

Both local offices sit at 108 Court Street in West Union. Phone and fax work too. If you plan to mail a written request, contact the clerk first. Doddridge County publishes no standard certified-copy request form or mailing checklist. The Circuit Clerk's email is michele.britton@courtswv.gov. Confirm that attachments are accepted. Check your delivery method as well.

Doddridge County No-Result Checks

A blank result has many possible causes. Misspelled names, the 30-record Magistrate cap, the wrong court, a filing delay, a paper-only record, or an access restriction can each hide a case. So can a portal outage. Each cause points to a different next step. Treat "no result" as a dead end for that search only, never proof that no case exists.

  • Retry the exact case number and check punctuation or leading zeros.
  • For a name, confirm spelling and narrow a broad MCRSearch result set.
  • Switch systems only if the matter belongs to the other court level.
  • Ask the clerk whether the file is stored on paper or under a new appeal or transfer number.
  • For a hidden item, ask what lawful access route exists instead of trying to bypass a restriction.

Magistrate clerk offices provide public terminals for the statewide search. Circuit records stay available through the Circuit Clerk as electronic access grows. The offices do not publish exact counter hours, so call ahead before driving to West Union.

Access and Restricted Cases

West Virginia law favors public inspection of court records. Sealing rules still govern protected files. WVPASS leaves out juvenile cases and sealed filings. CourtPLUS sorts material into Public, Confidential-Low, Confidential-High, Sealed, and Expunged security levels. That level decides visibility. It controls whether a case style, party, docket item, or document shows at all.

Family Court files deserve extra caution. Under W.Va. Code ยง48-1-303, domestic-relations orders copied into civil order books are public. Pleadings, exhibits, and other Family papers stay confidential. Inspection may require party status. It may also require a lawyer, a guardian ad litem, an authorized designee, or permission by rule or court order. One public order does not open the whole Family file.

Juvenile, adoption, guardianship, abuse and neglect, mental-health, personal-safety, sealed, and expunged categories face similar limits. Ask the clerk what comes first. It may be inspection, a redacted copy, a motion, or proof of status. A missing item is not lawfully yours just because another search exists.

Doddridge County Clerk Verification

Circuit Clerk Michele D. Britton keeps the Circuit and Family Court records at 108 Court Street, Suite 4, West Union, WV 26456. Call 304-873-2331, fax 304-873-2260, or write to michele.britton@courtswv.gov. Magistrate Clerk April Meeks works the Magistrate route. Her office sits at 108 Court Street. Phone 304-873-2694. Fax 304-873-2643.

Be specific when you contact either office. Name the court you searched and the exact case number. Add the entry or document needed. Say whether you want a plain or certified copy. Ask about the current fee, payee, delivery method, and timeline. WVPASS downloads and Magistrate photocopies each carry their own rates, and Doddridge County sets no single certified-copy price.

For hearings, verify time, location, and remote or in-person terms through the Doddridge County court calendar verification steps. For an order, name the exact docket event. The clerk's answer and the original record are the final check. Portal information may be incomplete, delayed, or limited.
